You finally get your newborn to sleep. You gently lower them into the bassinet, tiptoe away, and… WIDE AWAKE!👀
Sound familiar?
If your baby seems to think you’re their personal mattress, you’re definitely not alone. And there’s actually a sweet reason behind it!
Welcome to the fourth trimester: the first three months of your baby’s life outside the womb.
Think about it. For nine months, your little one was surrounded by warmth, gentle movement, and the comforting sound of your heartbeat.
Now everything is new! The lights, sounds, temperatures, and even that cozy bassinet.
Being close to you provides familiar sensations that help your newborn feel calm and secure. Plus, newborn sleep cycles are still developing, which means they wake much more easily than adults.
Translation? You’re their favorite place to be. 💗
Not one little bit!
Newborns aren’t manipulating you or developing bad habits by wanting to be held. They’re simply communicating their need for comfort and connection.
Responding to those needs helps build a secure, loving bond.
So enjoy those sweet snuggles, mama!
Just remember that contact naps require an awake, alert caregiver. For safe sleep, babies should always be placed on their backs in their own firm, flat crib or bassinet, free of pillows, blankets, and toys.
While there’s no magic trick (we wish!), a few simple things may help:
And remember, every baby is different. Some adjust to bassinet naps quickly, while others need more time.
Sometimes, yes!
If your baby seems constantly unsettled, struggles to latch, feeds for long periods without seeming satisfied, or isn’t gaining weight as expected, it may be time for a feeding assessment.
At Orlando Lactation & Newborn Services, our team of nurses and lactation consultants looks at the whole baby, not just the latch.
With over 200 years of combined nursing experience, our team understands how feeding challenges and newborn health can affect your little one’s comfort.
Those newborn cuddles are precious, but being needed around the clock can be exhausting.
You deserve rest, reassurance, and support, too.
From breastfeeding help to postpartum care and overnight newborn nursing, Orlando Lactation & Newborn Services has been helping Central Florida families feel confident and cared for since 2005.
Because babies don’t come with instruction manuals… but thankfully, you don’t have to figure it all out alone!💕
